Georgia Health Exchange

Georgia is required to set up a health insurance exchange by 2014, as mandated in the health care reform bill. The federal government will set up exchanges for states that don't set up their own.

The Federal Supreme Court court is now reviewing the constitutional legality of the individual health insurance mandate. Their decision is expected in June 2012 and will have a major impact on the ability of the Federal Government to uphold both the healthcare reform law and the establishment of the Georgia Health Exchange.

Healthcare Reform

The Affordable Care Act, passed in March of 2010, has had a significant impact on Georgia residents.

Positive changes - Young adults are allowed to stay on their parent's plan until they turn 26 years old. Preventive healthcare services are now covered at 100% with no member out of pocket expenses.

Negative changes - Since children under 19 may no longer be denied coverage due to pre-existing health conditions, all Georgia health insurance companies elected to no longer accept child only applications.
